National Survey Authority And Geospatial Information

The National Survey Authority (NSA) was established in October 1984 as a central agency for the production of topographic maps for civilian and military purposes throughout the Sultanate of Oman. The agency was tasked with setting the standards for topographic surveys carried out in the sultanate, and for maintaining the national archive of geographical materials. NSA can provide a wide range of geographic-related information and aerial maps made possible by the wide variety of printing equipment and modern software it has at its disposal. The National Survey Authority is respected for its highly accurate surveying systems and advanced analytical photographic equipment. All geo-spatial data is rigorously checked by the authority before its distribution to end users.

The Authority plays a major role in maintaining survey networks, providing geographical references, and training in the design and production of maps. The Institute of Surveying Sciences and Map Production was established by the NSA and offers a national diploma in Surveying and Cartography to employees from military and civil departments concerned with the preparation of maps.

The National Survey Authority has achieved international acknowledgement by winning the Global Geospatial Forum Award in recognition of its exemplary application of geospatial policies and programmes with the implementation of its pioneering project to establish the National Geodetic Reference for the Sultanate of Oman (ONGD14). This award is conferred for innovation and creativity in geospatial technology. In addition, the Authority received an Excellence Award from the Global Geospatial Forum for its success in establishing the National Geodetic Model for the Sultanate of Oman (OMAN GEOID). It has also won Al Roya Economic Award for establishing the Continuous Operation Reference Station (CORS) which was recognized nationally as the most outstanding government project in 2018.

In an effort to reach out to the public and spread awareness of geospatial concepts and applications, the National Survey Authority was instrumental in organizing the Oman Geospatial Forum and accompanying exhibitions. As well as continuing its work to recompile, produce and publish updated maps using new survey data collected to a higher degree of accuracy, it supplies all kinds of geospatial data to interested entities and acts as a conduit for the production, communication, application and exchange of geospatial data between government and private sector institutions.

The National Survey Authority is the official body entrusted with producing, reviewing, and approving the maps of the Sultanate of Oman. Approval from the Authority must be obtained before using and publishing any map of the Sultanate of Oman. The Authority reserves the right to take all necessary administrative and legal measures regarding the unauthorized use of geospatial data.
