Royal Army of Oman
The Royal Army of Oman has an illustrious past which is recorded in the history of Omani military campaigns, a history full of courage, sacrifice and heroism. It is the oldest of the three services of the Sultan’s Armed Forces. Its first regular force known as the “Muscat Recruits” was formed in 1907, and acted as a garrison force for Muscat. During the reign of Sultan Taimur bin Faisal, this local garrison expanded and was later named the Muscat Levy Corps in 1921. The Royal Army continued to expand over a number of decades and underwent changes in its organization and level of armament. In early 1976, when the Sultan's Armed Forces as a whole was reorganized, the army became an independent service called the Sultan of Oman’s Land Forces. On December 11 1986, His Late Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said - may Allah rest his soul in peace - the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, presented the Sultan of Oman's Land Forces with its flag. In 1990, a Royal Decree renamed the Sultan of Oman’s Land Forces as the Royal Army of Oman.
Since the dawn of the blessed renaissance led by His Late Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said - may Allah rest his soul in peace - and with the grace of Allah Almighty and the wise directives of His Majesty, increased attention has been given to this well-established service providing it with armaments and training to keep pace with modern armies in other parts of the world. As befits an essential component of the Sultan's Armed Forces, the Royal Army of Oman continues to receive all the attention and consideration of His Majesty, given its important national role and patriotic duty. The Royal Army of Oman consists of a number of units with various operational capabilities, as well as support and administrative branches.
