The task of the Omani Hydrographic office and the Directorate of Hydrography, including other matters, is concerned in enhancing the safety of maritime navigation through cooperation with the government authorities and organizations and committees of same concern internally, regionally and internationally. Also, ONHO carries out training of hydrographic survey, developing abilities, drawing nautical charts and exchange maritime information for scientific research purposes.
ONHO supports all activities related to the seas such as exploring and exploiting the different sources, managing and protecting the maritime environment, boundaries including the necessary studies for the extension of the continental shelf. Also, the ONHO is responsible for sustaining a maritime database and archiving all related data in the National Hydrographic archives.
The ONHO produce navigational paper and electronic charts and other special and classified charts for military and maritime security use, also there are other charts to support conducting essential studies related to sea floods, tsunami, management of coastal areas and maritime tourism and science in general.
As the head of Oman National Hydrographic Office, I am very proud of the national achievements done by ONHO and directorate of Hydrography with well qualified Omanis. It is worth to say that, the Sultanate of Oman is a pioneer country in the region in the field of Hydrography. The International Hydrography Organization (IHO) was right when gave the slogan <<Hydrography is more than nautical charts>>. This was the slogan for the Hydrography International Day which was on 21st June 2014.
